Outlook Web Access

With Microsoft Office Outlook Web Access, you can use a Web browser to access your Microsoft Exchange mailbox from any computer with an Internet connection. You can read and send messages, organize contacts, create tasks, schedule appointments and meetings, and access public folders.

Supported browsers and operating systems

You can use Outlook Web Access with Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator Web browsers from many UNIX, Apple Macintosh, or Microsoft Windows-based computers. To use the complete set of features available with Outlook Web Access, use Internet Explorer 6 or later. For specific information about which operating systems and browser versions are supported by Outlook Web Access, contact your server administrator or service provider.

Getting Help

Click a topic to the left to see Help for that area. Scroll down for information on configuring the language settings of your Web browser, and for information about common error messages your browser may display while you work with Outlook Web Access.

Note  Some features described in Help won't be available if your mailbox server hasn't been upgraded to the latest version of Exchange Server or if your server administrator has turned off any features.

For information on accessing Outlook Web Access over your intranet or the Internet, see the Microsoft Exchange Server online documentation or contact your server administrator.

Log off

When you finish using Outlook Web Access, be sure to click Log Off in the Navigation Pane, and then close all browser windows. Clicking Log Off helps prevent someone else from using the computer to access your mailbox. Before visiting another Web site, click Log Off and close all browser windows after every Outlook Web Access session.

Languages

Outlook Web Access supports more than 20 languages. To change the default language of your Internet Explorer Web browser:

  1. In Internet Explorer, on the View menu, select Internet Options, and then click Languages.
  2. To add a language to the list of available languages, in Language Preference, click Add. If you're not sure whether a particular language is supported, ask your server administrator.
  3. To move a language to the top of the list, select the language, and then click Move Up.

Common error messages

Outlook Web Access uses Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) to display Exchange mailbox information in a Web browser. The following are explanations for some common HTTP error messages that may occur while you are using Outlook Web Access.

Error Description
400 Bad Request A request from your browser, such as to open a folder or view a message, was incorrect. This can happen if the connection with your Exchange server was interrupted. Try the request again.
401 Unauthorized You don't have permission to access a particular item or folder. The owner or administrator of the item or folder must grant your account the appropriate permission. Contact an administrator for more information. You may also see this error message if you typed your password incorrectly.
403 Forbidden You're not allowed to perform this action. Contact an administrator if you think it is an action you should be allowed to perform.
404 Not Found The item or folder you're trying to access has been moved or deleted. Refresh your browser by clicking Check for New Messages Button image on the toolbar. You may also see this message if you're trying to access a folder that you don't have sufficient permission to view.
500 Server Error There has been a failure in the Internet Information Services (IIS) on your Exchange server. Contact an administrator immediately.
500 Internal Server Error Your Exchange server was unable to process your request. This can be due to a number of server configurations. Contact an administrator.
